Henry Cavendish was born to British parents in Nice, France in 1731. He was educated at Peterhouse College, Cambridge University.

Cavendish is best known for his discovery of the composition of water, in terms of the elements hydrogen and oxygen. He also studied the specific heats of various substances and the properties of the element hydrogen. Cavendish conducted a famous experiment to determine the density of the earth.
