Census Blocks

Introduction

A census block is the smallest geographic area for which the US Census Bureau tabulates data. These blocks are defined by visible features like streets and streams, or by nonvisible boundaries such as property lines and city limits. They are used to provide basic demographic data like population, age, sex, and race, and are grouped into larger units like block groups and census tracts for more detailed analysis.

The geographic data for all census blocks in Alabama creates files that are much too large for the display of maps and tables in a browser. Even if possible, the census blocks are far too tiny to be visible in a map of the entire state. For these reasons, the census blocks maps and tables are given by county and by urban area.
